The rogaine is over and packed away in its box for another year... Check your Results here.

What the..?

This is a paddle boat rogaine for waka ama, kayaks, surfskis and any other human powered watercraft.

A rogaine is a type of orienteering that combines the physical challenge of a race event with the excitement of filling in your tax return!

Paddlers will be given a map of the course and will accumulate points by visiting as many checkpoints as they can, buffet-style, in the time allowed. Points are lost for finishing after the time limit.

Why?

The intention is for this to be a fun alternative to the races we normally paddle. Rogaines are popular on land but very few have been held on the water in NZ. It will be a fun experiment and the paddlers will be guinea pigs, or if you prefer, test pilots.

The event is being organised by local paddler Craig Anderson, with help from Chester Burt (waka ama/surfski series) and Shane Ross (betterthantv.co.nz)

Where?

The start and finish will be on the beach east of the Paremata Bridge.

The course will have checkpoints on Pauatahanui and Porirua harbour arms and the entrance as far as Karehana Bay.

There will be enough checkpoints in the sheltered harbours to occupy those paddlers who choose not to tackle the open water of the harbour entrance. See Course and Scoring

Who?

The event is open to any human-powered craft.

All paddlers must be at least 18 years old or accompanied on board by an adult

All paddlers must have appropriate skill and experience - see Safety below.

The $10 entry fee is payable per boat. The more people you can fit on your craft the cheaper it gets!

What to Bring

Apart from the obvious stuff we all know, you might also need:

Entry Fee - $10

Footwear - Some of the checkpoints you might choose require a short walk.

Spectacles - If you wear them. The print on the map will be small.

Cellphone or VHF radio - ...in a waterproof bag, for emergencies.

Watch - You will want to keep track of the time.

A Pen - You may want to make some notes on the map before you start.

Drink - Water will be available at the start/finish

Prizes

There will be recognition of high achievers at a brief but moving ceremony after the event, and some spot prizes. There will be a limited number of categories depending on entry numbers.

Registration

Like the sound of all that? Better get in quick then, the event is limited to 50 boats.

Because of the work involved in producing the maps and score cards, all paddlers need to register by email in advance. This will also help me organise the trophy engraving!

To enter just email the Organiser.

So easy!
